SERVICES
BOOKS: The libraries operate as lending facilities for books
for all ages and interests. This includes classics, current poplar
reading, reference books and books that cover all fields of
information. There is also a collection of books in large print.

MAGAZINES and NEWSPAPERS are available for use in the
library and for circulation. Electronic databases offer indexes
and full text of articles for a large number of periodicals.
One of the favorites is the Electric Library, an online research service covering over 8 million documents from 6 different
media sources. Included are popular magazines and scholarly journals, newspapers, and news wires, television and radio transcripts, photographs and maps, children’s publications, reference and historical sources, and articles from multicultural publications.


INTERLIBRARY LOANS may be requested on loan or by
photocopy from another library. Patrons are responsible for
the cost of duplicated materials, and/or insurance fee, if any.

AUDIOCASSETTES include foreign language tapes, books on
tape, and book/tape combinations for children.

VIDEOCASSETTES for adults and children include animated
movies, feature films and instructional and travel videos.
They may be borrowed for 2 nights.

FREE INTERNET ACCESS is available for patrons 18 years or
older. Children under 18 years of age, must have a disclaimer
signed by a parent or guardian or be accompanied by a parent.

PUBLIC USE OF COMPUTERS are available for word processing,
spreadsheets and graphics presentations. These computers
employ Microsoft for windows software.

PRINTERS are available at the various PC workstations for a
cost of $.10 per page each.

BOOK DEPOSITORIES are located at the front doors and may
be used to return books when the library is CLOSED.

FAX MACHINES are available for individuals and businesses to
send and receive messages during library hours. Cost for
sending is $1.00 for the first page, $.50 and $.25 for each
additional page. Please notify a staff member if you plan to
receive a fax at the library.
CIRCULATION
CIRCULATION POLICY

LOAN PERIOD

BOOKS and other reading materials may be checked out for 2
weeks and can be renewed if materials are not in demand.
renewals may be made in person or by telephone.

VIDEOCASSETTES may be checked out for 2 nights. The
library assumes no responsibility for damage to patron’s
equipment. Videocassettes are copyrighted and are for
private use only. They may not be duplicated or erased.

New members may borrow two books and one videocassette
(or 3 books) on their first visit. After return of materials from
checkout, 2 videos per card may be checked out at any one
time

FINES

Patrons will be charged $.10 per day per overdue book or
audiotape. The maximum fine is $2.00 per book. Video
fines are $1.00 per day, with a maximum fine of $10.00
per video. Patrons will be liable for the rental value of lost
or damaged material. If a patron has fines in excess of
$3.00, or items excessively overdue, he may not check
out materials.

RESERVES

Patrons may reserve most materials and will be notified by
phone when the item is available. Reserved items will be
held up to 3 days.

COMPUTERIZED CARD CATALOG

Nottoway Public Libraries’ card catalog is on computer.
VTLS’s system is a "user friendly" software package that
allows quick and easy access to your favorite titles. Patrons
search for library materials by author, title, subject or
keyword. Library staff members are always available and
happy to help users utilize the computerized card catalog.
YOUTH SERVICES
YOUTH SERVICES


The library encourages young visitors to use the library,
participate in our activities and read. Besides reading
materials, our libraries offer ongoing programs which include:

STORYTIME – Between the second week of October
and the second week of December and between the
second week in January and the first week in May,
preschoolers between 2-5 may enjoy stories, music,
films and crafts on Fridays between 10 & 11 in
Blackstone and Burkeville. The same hour serves
as Story Hour on Thursdays in Crewe.

SUMMER READING PROGRAMS
Children are encouraged to "Get Carried Away With
Books" this summer as they enjoy weekly activities
and programs at their community library. Contact
your library for registration and time information.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
June 30: "Concert Ballet of Virginia" -Young people
will dance the story of "Pecos Bill"
Blackstone Library at 10:00 A.M.
Crewe Library at 1:30 P.M.

July 14: "Mahoney’s Forge"– Joe Mahoney will
explain certain life styles of the past as he presents
"rope making" and "tools of the past".

July 27: "Granny Louise" – professional storyteller
will share stories from her collection of childrens’
classics, folktales, and original family tales.

FRIENDS
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY



Friends of the Library is a non-profit group which exists to
focus public attention on libraries, stimulate the use of the
library’s services and facilities and to encourage gifts,
endowments, and bequests to the library. The Friends
sponsor an annual book sale and programs throughout the
year. There are Friends groups in Blackstone, Crewe and
Burkeville which will welcome new members. Call your
local library to determine meeting times.

LIBRARY CARDS
GETTING YOUR LIBRARY CARD


Any resident of Nottoway County may obtain a library card by
completing an application at the circulation desk. There is a
fee of $3.00 for those who are not a resident of the county.
Children under the age of 13 must have their application signed
by a parent or guardian. Regardless of where a card was issued,
It may be used for borrowing materials at any of the 3 county
libraries. The first card is issued free of charge. Replacement
cards cost $.25.

The patron is responsible for all items checked out on his card
and is expected to display it in order to check out materials.
